For class today we visited the Archeological Museum in Madrid today! Normally I’m not a big museum person, but it was very interesting to see Spanish history in front of me. I will share some of the things I found interesting.

Mosaic Tiles:

Something made to be beautiful

I found these tiles, used in plazas on the ground in early ancient Spain history to be very beautiful and impressive. Artists would make these by using different colors of rocks to form beautiful patterns to add art to rooms/areas. The big one on the ground is a calendar!

A Christian Casket:

Something made to honor the dead

I found this “casket” to be so detailed and interesting. The amount of time and attention to detail it takes to make something like this is incredible. These caskets we’re made for Greeks, in ancient history. Artists would make these “caskets” to honor the dead with a proper burial.

The Guarrazar Hoard:

Something made of gold

I found these crowns to just be beautiful. I think it can be hard to wrap my head around the fact that the people that made these did not have the techniques or materials that we do today, and that makes it so much more impressive. This technique to make them can be dated back to 621 and 672. Crowns were often offerings made by emperors, kings, magnates, & civilians to churches and monasteries. They symbolized the bond between the monarchy.

That‘s all for today!👑

Stay tuned to study abroad with me.

Adios!

Morgan
